Fisher Towers

There are so many photographers who go to Moab, Utah, to shoot in the national parks of Canyonlands and Arches. Every time we go to Moab, we do the same. But, there is one area that is every bit as beautiful and unique. It is outside the parks. This place is called, “Fisher Towers”.

When we visited Moab with Rachel (our daughter) a couple of years ago, we met up with a couple of close friends, Liz and Jim. They love Moab. They live nearby. They like to hike. We like to hike. So, we planned a weekend of hiking in and around Moab. But, Kas and I have this itch that always needs scratching. We need to shoot too. We had researched Fisher Towers quite a bit and really wanted to photograph it. All five of us arrived in the mid-afternoon and we started to shoot – two of us. After awhile, we got the sense the other three had enough of Fisher Towers and wanted to get a beer.  We couldn’t blame them, it was still hours to sunset. Since we all drove together, we all had to leave together. Disappointed, we left the sunset shot (the best part) for another day.

Flash forward to the present. It’s just the two of us this time. And, we planned to stay as late as needed to get the shot.

Boy, were we rewarded.

Always take a vertical of a great scene, you never know when it could be of use. In a magazine? Or, just for this blog.

Just to reinforce why we will do most anything to get the shot and make sure it is at the right time, here is a shot from our previous visit with Rachel and friends.

Shot at 2:30 PM, the scene lacks the depth of color we usually like at the golden hour.

So, next time you are out for a photo shoot, make sure you wait for the sunset. And, make sure you are with other photographers!

Two years later, it’s all about the light!
